Principal Research Scientist required by this leading Defence organisation based in Essex.

A highly innovative engineer is required to join an interdisciplinary team within the Sensor Systems Department. Reporting to the Group Leader, the successful candidate will be expected to lead the development of new technologies and techniques associated with electro-optic, remote sensing and imaging systems. The Team has a broad technology capability which ranges from implementing specialist imaging systems, through the development of state of the art sub-systems for adaptive optics and photonic signal processing, to the application of laser rangefinding for autonomy, coherent systems for remote sensing and new display technologies.

Technical competency and the ability to find creative solutions to difficult problems are critical skills in this position. Applicants must be able to resolve complex technical problems and address design challenges using an interdisciplinary approach that utilises skills in multiple technical areas.

Key responsibility areas: Design, develop and evaluate both hardware and software components for advanced Electro-Optical Sensor systems. Design , develop and utilise modelling and simulation software for Electro-Optic systems. Perform geometrical optical design to include Imaging Lenses, Telescopes and other Optical systems. Present and communicate creative solutions and results of work to senior technical and management within the company as well as to external experts at conferences etc. Contribute to the business development process by both leading and participating in proposal efforts as well as the development of new ideas. Employ systems engineering processes during the design of new systems and facilitate hardware integration and testing.

The successful candidate will be educated to Degree level in Physics or related subject ideally with a PhD in Optics and some experience of Electro-Optical design/research. Previous experience of reporting (verbal & written) and proposal generation would be advantageous. Having worked previously in a project management role would also enhance your application.

The role is based in Essex, but it is possible that travel in the UK and Europe will be required depending upon project requirements.
